Transition Towns Africa

A comunity network for towns in Africa wanting sustainable change

This website is an Initiating Hub for towns and suburbs that want to begin galvanising their community to work together for a positive, sustainable future, in the light of climate change, economic instability, possible electricity and water shortages, inadequate municipal services, and rising fuel and food costs.

The Transition Town Initiative encourages a GO LOCAL, PRO-ACTIVE, COMMUNITY attitude as one of the best solutions for dealing with future pressures.

Our goals

To empower communities to respond effectively to energy and infrastructure limitations as well as rapidly increasing fuel prices.

To educate towards a reduction in consumption, energy efficiency and conservation awareness

To build community consciousness and strengthen the local economy through supporting local initiatives.

To use alternative methods of exchange like the Community Exchange System

BUY LOCAL !
support local independently-owned businesses and cut transport costs

EAT LOCAL !
support local growers, farmers’ markets, restaurants and stores offering locally-grown food; promote closer connections between our communities and those who grow our food

GROW LOCAL !
Develop local food security through flourishing gardens, community greenhouses, and community farms

LOCAL ENERGY !
develop sustainable local renewable energy sources

LOCAL MONEY !
Trade local with local money

Hi Angie

I am very excited about the development of a consciousness of the need and benefits of building transition towns. A few weeks ago, I investigated starting a Cape Town branch of an initiative called Green Drinks. I think it would be a great idea to start a similar idea to facilitate action and information sharing with the view to instigating action in Cape Town communities. Developing a set of processes and or information tools that can be shared, used and or tweaked would help the movement immensely.

In my experience of this type of movement, once you start a community in one area, it very quickly mushrooms into surrounding areas. Just need a flagship community.
